Winter Trail(48X36)2016
Winter Trail, 48X36″, Oil on canvas, 2016

It’s been a warm winter this year.  I’ve been working on several paintings of winter but it seems to take me longer to paint them than for the snow to melt away.  This is unusual for our part of Minnesota.  As I write this in early March, very little snow is left on the ground. Today, I watched a pair of swans walking on Lake Hattie, honking at each other quietly (quietly for trumpeter swans, that is).  They looked like they were checking out the real estate, deciding where to set up nest.  It’s kind of exciting, to feel like winter might end soon, even though the landscape looks very messy and what snow we have is crusty and dirty.
